History of SSA
In 2012, we celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of the Statistical Society of Australia (SSA).
Initially founded as the “Statistical Society of New South Wales” in 1947 the Stats Society quickly gained a strong base of followers. In 1962 it joined forces with the Canberra Statistical Society to create a national Statistical Society. The Rules, SSA's constitution for a new national Central Council, were written in the same year with the NSW Society and Canberra Society amalgamating and forming its first state branches. Pat Moran was elected the first president of the Statistical Society of Australia.
The aim of the founders of the Society was to “(further) the study and application of statistical methods in all branches of knowledge and human activity” and their wonderful legacy lives on until today. In 2015 the trading name of the Statistical Society of Australia Inc was changed to "Statistical Society of Australia" with the new acronym "SSA".
Back in 2012 SSA marked the special occasion with the compilation of a “History of the SSAI” to record SSA’s fascinating history. The full publication is available here.
